Finding a scorpion on the kitchen floor is a shock, and in new villa communities it happens more than people expect. If you live near the desert edge and need help now, see our pest control in Al Shamkha page. This guide explains why scorpions in Al Shamkha get into homes, which gaps they use, what to do after a sting and how to keep them out for good.
Key Points
- Scorpions hunt at night and hide in cracks during the day to stay cool and damp.
- New villas next to open sand see more of them, especially in the warm months.
- Most get in through gaps under doors, weep holes, pipe holes and drains.
- After a sting, wash the area, use a cold pack and get medical advice. Call 998 if the person feels very unwell.
- Sealing gaps plus a treatment around the outside of the villa works far better than spraying indoors.
Why Scorpions Turn Up in Al Shamkha Homes
Al Shamkha grew out of open desert. Communities like Alreeman and Fay Alreeman sit right next to sand, empty plots and building sites. That land was home to scorpions long before the villas arrived, and many of them simply stayed.
The black fat tailed scorpion is one of the types found across Abu Dhabi. The Environment Agency Abu Dhabi says it is active at night and hides in crevices during the day to hold on to moisture. It has even been recorded in the Al Wathba Wetland Reserve, just next door to Al Shamkha. A cool, damp gap under your door looks like the perfect crevice.
Three things in a new community make the problem worse:
- Digging and building. When a nearby plot is cleared, scorpions lose their hiding places and move toward the closest finished homes.
- Garden water. Drip lines and wet soil pull in crickets, cockroaches and beetles. Scorpions follow their food.
- Outdoor lights. Bright lights draw insects to your walls at night, and scorpions come to hunt them.
How Scorpions Get Inside a Villa
Scorpions are flat and can squeeze through a gap about the thickness of a credit card. These are the spots we find them using most often:

- Gaps under doors. Garden doors, kitchen back doors and majlis doors that do not seal at the bottom.
- Weep holes. The small drain holes at the base of boundary walls and some villa walls.
- Pipe and cable holes. Where AC pipes, water lines and cables pass through the wall without a tight seal.
- Floor drains. Bathroom and laundry drains with no cover, especially on the ground floor.
- Things left outside. Shoes, towels, toys and cushions left in the garden overnight, then carried in.
- Rubble and stacked items. Stones, wood and boxes against the wall give them a place to hide right next to the door.
What to Do If You Find a Scorpion Indoors
- Keep children and pets out of the room.
- Do not try to pick it up, even with gloves.
- If you can do it safely, cover it with a large glass jar or bowl and leave it there.
- Check the rest of the room, shoes and bedding before anyone goes back in.
- Call a licensed pest control team to find how it got in.
One scorpion can be a stray. Seeing two or more in a short time usually means they are coming from the same place, such as a gap, a pile of rubble or a nearby site.
What to Do After a Scorpion Sting
Most stings cause sharp pain, swelling and numbness around the spot. Some people, and especially young children, older adults and people with health problems, can react more strongly. Treat every sting seriously.

- Stay calm and keep the person as still as you can.
- Wash the area gently with soap and water.
- Put a cold pack wrapped in a cloth on the spot for about 10 minutes at a time.
- Remove rings or tight items near the sting in case of swelling.
- Do not cut the skin or try to suck out the venom.
- Get medical advice. For a child, go to a clinic or hospital straight away.
Call 998 for an ambulance if the person has trouble breathing, feels very weak, has muscle twitching, heavy sweating or vomiting. The Department of Health Abu Dhabi also runs a drug and poison information service on 800424 for advice. This guide is general information, not medical advice.
How to Keep Scorpions Out of Your Villa
Seal the Entry Points
- Fit brush or rubber strips under every outside door.
- Cover weep holes with stainless steel mesh so water can still drain out.
- Seal gaps around AC pipes and cables with a good outdoor sealant.
- Use covers on ground floor drains and keep them closed at night.
Make the Garden Less Inviting
- Keep a clear strip of about half a metre next to the villa walls. No stones, wood, boxes or thick plants.
- Fix leaking drip lines and avoid watering late in the evening.
- Move outdoor lights away from doors, or use warm yellow bulbs that draw fewer insects.
- Bring shoes, towels and cushions inside before dark.
Check at Night With a UV Torch
Scorpions glow under ultraviolet light. A small UV torch shows them on walls and paths after dark. A quick walk around the villa on a warm night tells you if you have a problem and where they are coming from.
When Professional Scorpion Control Makes Sense
DIY steps help, but they rarely solve the problem alone when your villa backs onto sand. Call a professional when:
- You see scorpions inside more than once.
- You have young children or elderly family at home.
- Building work is going on next to your plot.
- You have just moved into a new villa and want a check before you settle in.
Our team inspects the boundary wall, garden, doors and drains, then treats around the outside of the villa to make a barrier. We also treat the insects scorpions feed on and show you which gaps to seal. You can read more about our scorpion control in Abu Dhabi. If pests come back within 30 days, the follow up visit is free.
For homes near the desert, an annual pest control plan keeps the outside barrier fresh before the warm months. We also cover nearby Al Wathba and Al Falah.
Scorpion FAQs for Al Shamkha Families
Are scorpions in Al Shamkha dangerous?
Most stings cause strong pain and swelling but are not life threatening for healthy adults. Children, older people and anyone with health problems can react more strongly, so every sting needs medical advice.
What time of year are scorpions most active?
They are most active on warm nights, from spring through autumn. In winter they move less and stay hidden in cracks and under stones.
Can scorpions climb walls?
Some can climb rough surfaces like block walls, stone and tree bark. Smooth tiles and glass are much harder for them, which is why most enter at floor level.
Will a spray inside the house stop scorpions?
Not on its own. Indoor sprays miss the places they come from. Sealing gaps and treating around the outside of the villa works much better.
Do you treat new villas before we move in?
Yes. An empty villa is the easiest time to inspect, seal gaps and treat the outside before furniture and family arrive.
