This guide explains what the gel does, how to use it properly, why it often fails, and when professional cockroach control in Abu Dhabi is the faster and cheaper choice.

What Advion Gel Is and How It Works
Advion is a cockroach gel bait made by Syngenta. The active ingredient is indoxacarb at a low strength of 0.6 percent, mixed into a food the cockroaches like to eat. Unlike a spray, it does not kill on contact. A cockroach eats the gel, goes back to its hiding place and dies there, usually within a few days.
That slow action is the whole point. Cockroaches that die in their hiding spots are eaten by others, and their droppings are eaten by young cockroaches. The poison moves through the group, so the gel reaches cockroaches you never see. It also has no strong smell and does not drive cockroaches away, which is why it works better indoors than most sprays.
Does Advion Gel Work in Abu Dhabi Homes?
Yes, for the right problem. In most Abu Dhabi flats and villas the indoor cockroach is the German cockroach, the small light brown one that lives in kitchens and bathrooms. Gel bait is one of the best tools against it.
The trouble is speed of breeding. One German cockroach egg case holds 30 to 40 young, and it takes about 40 days to go from egg to an adult that can breed, according to pest experts quoted by Gulf News. If you only treat the few you see, the next hatch replaces them. In towers on Al Reem Island or the Corniche, cockroaches also travel between flats through pipe shafts, so your gel may be fighting a colony that lives next door.
How to Use Advion Gel the Right Way
Most failures come from how the gel is used, not the gel itself. The product label gives clear rules. Here they are in plain words:
- Use small spots, not big blobs. Each spot should be about the size of a small pea, around 5 mm wide. Many small spots beat a few large ones.
- Use enough. The label asks for at least 2 spots per square metre, and up to 5 for a heavy problem. A light problem can need half a 30 gram tube.
- Put it where they hide. Door hinges inside cabinets, the gap behind the fridge, under the sink, around the dishwasher and cracks near the stove. Not in the open.
- Keep it away from food, children and pets. Do not put gel on worktops, chopping areas or anywhere a child or pet can reach.
- Avoid hot and washed surfaces. Do not use it on surfaces above 50°C, like oven parts or hot pipes, or on places you clean every day.
- Never spray on top of it. Surface sprays spoil the bait and make cockroaches avoid it.
- Store it cool. The label says to keep it below 35°C. In an Abu Dhabi summer that rules out the car, the balcony and a hot store room.
Why Advion Gel Stops Working
1. Spray and cleaning undo the bait
Many people use gel and a supermarket spray at the same time. The spray coats the gel and the cockroaches stop eating it. Strong kitchen cleaners do the same. If you use gel, stop spraying and leave the dots alone.
2. The gel runs out
In a busy kitchen the spots get eaten in days. If you do not check and add more, the treatment stops while the next hatch arrives.
3. Cockroaches can stop dying from it
When the same active ingredient is used again and again, some cockroaches survive and breed. A 2018 Purdue University study found one field population of German cockroaches more than 10,000 times more resistant to indoxacarb than normal, and only about 20 percent of them died after 14 days on the bait. A later Purdue study found resistance can rise four to six times in a single generation. Professionals rotate between different active ingredients for this reason. A home user with one tube cannot.
4. The product may not be genuine
Syngenta warned in March 2026 that fake Advion is sold through mail order and online marketplaces, and that some fakes contained little or no indoxacarb, or a different chemical altogether (PPC Online). When we checked UAE shops online in November 2026, a 30 gram tube was listed at prices from about AED 45 to AED 115. A very low price is a warning sign. Buy only from a trusted seller and check that the label shows a UAE registration number from the Ministry of Climate Change and Environment.
5. The source is somewhere else
